For Counselors

You have a heart, and counsel your clients to help them heal.

Clinically Tested Tools Empowering clients to learn how to help themselves
Written as poetry, this makes the material easy to remember for young clients and caregivers. There is also a section at the end of each book assisting counselors to teach caregivers how to broach these difficult subjects, along with a list of leading questions for caregivers and children to engage in discussion.

Working with professional counselors and therapists, I’ve realized one thing – they want to put themselves out of job. You don’t counsel your clients to keep them tethered to you, creating in clients a need that they must see you for the rest of their lives. No, you have a heart to help them heal, promoting wellness mentally, physically and spiritually. Your task is to assist them to become healthy, so they can lead a productive, enjoyable life, one filled with acceptance of their past and hopeful of their future. The Can-Do Kids series is a tool that promotes that journey.

My Body’s Mine was written at the request of a counselor because she was unable to find an appropriate book for three to eight-year-olds on sexual abuse prevention and body boundaries. As a professional with a thriving client base, mainly in the foster and adopt realm, she shared what basic information she needed in a book. Together we collaborated on every word in the book. Every illustration is specifically drawn so it is relatable for children. Because of the multicultural aspect of the book children of all races can relate to one child or another. “That’s me! I’m in this book,” a five-year-old client told one counselor. And through reading the poem and the discussion questions, abuse was discussed for the first time.

I Can Do That! was
written with a group of counselors creating
strategies to empower children to self-regulate.
Too often caregivers feel their child “is their behavior.” By helping caregivers create realistic expectations and finding those things that are triggers for their child is vital. Once discovered, proactive steps can be taken to minimize meltdowns. Practicing trauma informed care is vital when dealing with children from hard places and this book provides a way for you to share the steps necessary to help them help their child.

Understanding you have a choice in how you react in a situation is important. My Actions Matter was requested by counselors to help children see the difference their choice of behavior can make. By acknowledging their behavior, then seeing a different choice, it gives the child an opportunity to see how their behavior impacts others. The scripts provide a consistent response for caregivers, allowing the child to know what to expect when they display certain behaviors. Using these strategies helps build and strengthen relationships.

Providing ways to empower children is a first step in their gaining an understand that they have some control. They probably didn’t have a choice in what happened to them, but they have the power to change their narrative. Using these books as a tool toward that first step will help them connect to who they are, empower them to make responsible choices and help them see how correct behaviors have an impact for a lifetime.
